MY TOP 5 TIPS FOR LENGTH RETENTION

image

Hello everyone! Hope you all are having a wonderful day! I just wanted to give my two cents today on my top five ways to retain length. This is strictly my opinion and what has been working for me, but I’m sure everyone can benefit from most of these tips provided.

1. MOISTURE, MOISTURE, MOISTURE: I believe the most important step you can implement in your routine is keeping your hair strands hydrated. I have already talked about hydrating from the inside out in a previous post, but let me remind you, drinking water and plenty of fluids is very important! What you put inside of your body will very well show in your outer appearance. Also, spritzing your hair with a water based conditioner or simply water every night or when it becomes dry can have a major impact on the health of your hair. Hair tends to break when it is dry and brittle, so keeping your strands from becoming this way can ultimately help you retain length.

2. DEEP CONDITIONING: Finding a deep conditioner that works for you is very important to the health of your hair. I deep condition my hair once a week.  A good deep conditioner will provide moisture for your hair. It will also help your hair take on the stress and manipulation you put your hair through in between your wash sessions.

3. SATIN SCARF OR PILLOW: Cotton pillowcases rob the moisture in your hair. Satin scarves and pillowcases enable you to retain the moisture you worked so hard to get and it also protects your ends! So make sure you invest in a satin pillowcase if you are not keen to sleeping with a scarf on your head at night.

4. GETTING TRIMS REGULARLY: I regularly (maybe too regularly) trim my ends. I tend to go overboard, but I digress. Dusting (trimming an eighth of an inch) your ends regularly will help keep split ends at bay. Your hair cannot thrive with split ends creeping slowly up your hair shaft! Get rid of them! It’s nothing worse than a girl holding on to scraggly, see through ends for the sake of some “length”. As your can probably tell this is a pet peeve of mine. Ladies, trim about every eight weeks or when you deem necessary, just please don’t walk around with scraggly ends you will have to get rid of them at some point in order for you to retain length in the future!

5. MINIMIZE YOUR USE OF HEAT: I straighten my hair maybe twice a year and probably won’t do it again for another couple of years. I say this for two reasons, first of all, it doesn’t last long enough and secondly, it only takes one time for you to acquire heat damage no matter how careful you are. Everytime I have straightened my hair I have acquired some sort of heat damage and I’m back at square one nursing my hair back to health. And to make matters worse, my hair may have remained straight for a day or two, so that’s months of work for a day of straight hair. The trade off is not worth it for me. So if possible, use heat sparingly and when you do make sure your use some sort of heat protectant!

Hope these tips are helpful!! Have a good one:)

Product Review: Aphogee Curlific!

I know I told you in a previous post that I was very excited that Aphogee decided to jump on the bandwagon and began creating products specifically for curly haired girls! When my hair was relaxed, I used Aphogee’s original hair care line and I found it worked really well in my relaxed hair, especially the leave in conditioner. I was really hoping and wishing they delivered on this natural hair care line, because many of you product junkies know that it didn’t work well for some lines who transitioned from relaxed hair care lines to natural hair care lines. Well let me tell you something, Aphogee did not disappoint. So far I have tried the Aphogee Curlific Texture Treatment and the Aphogee Curlific Moisutre Rich Leave-In and I am loving them! Let me start with the leave-in conditioner:

curlific

  • Product Promises: Curlific! products are pH optimized for maximum results and contain our exclusive PropHyatmine Complex, utilizing proteins for strength, emollients for shine and humectants for softness. Curlific! is serious care for textured hair.
  • Uses: Snarls and tangles are a challenge on any head, but textured hair can be the toughest! The oval shape of curly strands can “interlock” like no other  and are also more prone to dryness. Curlific! Moisture Rich Leave-In solves both problems. Easy to use on wet or dry hair , it enhances the look and feel of your hair and helps eliminate the styling challenge!
  • How to Use: After showering and blotting hair dry, spray Curlific! Moisture Rich Leave-In directly onto hair the hair, taking care to avoid the eyes. Work through hair evenly and proceed to style as usual. Between shampoos, spray a small amount  into palm and work through hair before styling to detangle and to protect against heat.

Soooo, after I shampooed and finger detangled with conditioner, I rinsed the conditioner out and dryed my hair with a cotton t-shirt. Then, I applied this Moisture Rich Leave-In conditioner. My hair seemed to melt in my hands, It was so soft and manageable. It felt like silk. I feel like Aphogee really researched curly hair and chose ingredients that was necessary to protect our curls and make them more manageable. My hair was shiny and tangle free for days! And my styling process was a breeze. I would recommend this product to every curly girl, no matter your hair type! I love this leave-in conditioner just as much as I loved the original Protein Rich Leave-In conditioner by Aphogee!

  • Product Promises: Curlific! products are pH optimized for maximum results and contain our exclusive PropHyatmine Complex, utilizing proteins for strength, emollients for shine and humectants for softness. Curlific! is serious care for textured hair.
  • Uses: Wavy, Curly or Coiled hair types are more susceptible to damage than straight hair, due to the structure and styling resistance. Weekly use of Curlific! Texture Treatment maintains beautiful hair, regardless of the environment or styling regimen. A MUST FOR COLOR TREATED CURLS!
  • How to Use: Shampoo with Curlific Textured Hair Wash. After rinsing with warm water, work a liberal amount of Curlific! Texture Treatment through your thirsty locks. Leave on a minte and then rinse, finishing with cool water.

Once again, I shampooed my hair then applied this Texture Treatment. I left it on for about three minutes, then rinsed with cool water. This was definitely a treat for my hair I did not detangle before hand,  so I was pleasantly surprised when I rinsed my hair and my tangles melted away. My hair was soft, defined and I did not have to do much finger tangling afterwards. I can’t say that I have noticed a huge difference in my curls over a long period of time because I’ve only been using this product, once a week for three weeks. I can say that everytime I do use it, my hair feels healthier and it is easier to manage. My hair is color treated,so I’m hoping this product keeps my colored treated tresses healthy. I cannot wait to grow this color out, but I digress! To all my fellow curly, kinky, wavy, or coily haired naturalistas, I would definitely give Aphogee Curlific! line a try. You won’t be disappointed. Please share your experiences with Aphogee Curlific! in the comments below! I will be giving  the shampoo and curling cream a try soon, so stay tuned!
