Pre-Pooing for Natural Hair

Some naturals SWEAR by it, some say it is completely unnecessary! Either way, if you don’t already know or haven’t heard the term PRE-POO, where have you been??? Pre-pooing is the act of prepping and detangling the hair with an oil or conditioner prior to shampooing. It is supposed to help prevent the shampoo from stripping natural oils in our hair and aid in the detangling process. Sooo, how does it work? It protects the hair from a process known as hygral fatigue. Hygral fatigue is the result of excessive swelling of the hair cuticle as water is absorbed and the contracting of the hair cuticle as it dries.  The oil absorbs into the hair strands and protects the cuticle when the hair fiber swells, making the hair less susceptible to damage. Coconut oil is probably the most popular option, but there are plenty other options available.

How to Pre-Poo:

  1. Part your hair in 4 sections or as many sections as you like.
  2. Place oil or conditioner vigorously throughout each section, lightly detangling as you go.
  3. Place a plastic cap and let the oil or conditioner penetrate your strands and work its magic!
  4. Shampoo and condition.

untitled

  • How to Use: After conditioning with the Hair Type 4 Leaf Clover Conditioner, spray evenly onto damp hair. Use a wide-toothed comb or detangling brush to evenly distribute. Do not rinse. Style as usual.

First of all, let me start off by saying that I am a huge fan of The Mane Choice’s leave-in products. The Revitalize and Refresh 3 in 1 Conditioner has been a staple in my hair care routine for the past year. I am also experimenting with the vitamins at the moment (I will have another post dedicated to that topic). I will eventually try the entire line or at least more of the Hair Type 4 Leaf Clover line but I wanted to start with the leave-in. The first three ingredients of this leave-in is water, aloe vera juice, and biotin, which I believe are all huge contributing factors to adding moisture to your hair and aiding in hair growth. I am HIGHLY impressed with this leave-in. Within the first use, I felt like my hair was more moisturized, it helped to detangle my hair, and added a natural sheen to my strands. The look of the leave-in is a little off putting as it separates a great deal. I almost thought I had a bad batch. But not to fret, it just needed a good shake and everything was right with the world again. The smell may not be everyone’s cup of tea. I personally love it. It has a fresh, from the Earth type smell, if that makes sense. If you prefer products that smell like cake, you may not like the smell of this one. I spray this throughout the week to add moisture to my hair and it works like a charm. I will add, one drawback to this product, is that it actually foams up upon use after your conditioner and has a mouse like texture. That doesn’t particularly bother me as long as my hair is moisturized, but some may not like this feature. I would definitely recommend this for Type 4 hair, and it only made me want to try the entire line ASAP. I’ve heard many great things about it. I will definitely keep you posted!

Sooo, I decided before I did my next review, I would use the product I was reviewing consistently for at least three months in order to give you a very accurate, informative review. I have been using the As I Am Twist Defining Cream for three months or more and it has become a staple in my regimen. I shied away from doing twist outs and braid outs for awhile because I could not achieve the shine, and lasting ability I was aiming for. I decided to give this product a try. After the first use, I was very impressed to say the least. This product is a cream with a medium consistency. It smells just like your favorite fruit flavored candy! The smell is so wonderful. I did a braid out the first time I used this product. I applied the product from root to tip and braided my hair in about 12-16 braids. I had never really had a successful braid out before I used this product. The results were amazing. My hair was so shiny, bouncy, and it smelled heavenly. It was also extremely moisturized. I continued to use this product on twist outs, flat twists, braids, and mini twist. Every single time, my hair is extremely moisturized and shiny. This product leaves your hair soft but it has lasting results. My hair was ON POINT for days after use of this product. As I Am Twist Defining Cream delivers on each and every promise it delivers. It is a little pricey, but definitely worth it. My fellow naturalistas, this product is 10/10 for me and I highly suggest you try it! Here are some pics of some of the styles I did while using this product.

This was a braid out using the As I Am Twist Defining Cream, so much SHINE and DEFINITION!!! If you would like to see how I achieved this look, check out my Youtube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vm0USY19tVk&list=UUcy24C6D0PTKsiu9uJLYx4A
