Product Review: Aphogee Curlific!

aphogee-curlific-banner-2

I know I told you in a previous post that I was very excited that Aphogee decided to jump on the bandwagon and began creating products specifically for curly haired girls! When my hair was relaxed, I used Aphogee’s original hair care line and I found it worked really well in my relaxed hair, especially the leave in conditioner. I was really hoping and wishing they delivered on this natural hair care line, because many of you product junkies know that it didn’t work well for some lines who transitioned from relaxed hair care lines to natural hair care lines. Well let me tell you something, Aphogee did not disappoint. So far I have tried the Aphogee Curlific Texture Treatment and the Aphogee Curlific Moisutre Rich Leave-In and I am loving them! Let me start with the leave-in conditioner:

curlific

  • Product Promises: Curlific! products are pH optimized for maximum results and contain our exclusive PropHyatmine Complex, utilizing proteins for strength, emollients for shine and humectants for softness. Curlific! is serious care for textured hair.
  • Uses: Snarls and tangles are a challenge on any head, but textured hair can be the toughest! The oval shape of curly strands can “interlock” like no other  and are also more prone to dryness. Curlific! Moisture Rich Leave-In solves both problems. Easy to use on wet or dry hair , it enhances the look and feel of your hair and helps eliminate the styling challenge!
  • How to Use: After showering and blotting hair dry, spray Curlific! Moisture Rich Leave-In directly onto hair the hair, taking care to avoid the eyes. Work through hair evenly and proceed to style as usual. Between shampoos, spray a small amount  into palm and work through hair before styling to detangle and to protect against heat.

Soooo, after I shampooed and finger detangled with conditioner, I rinsed the conditioner out and dryed my hair with a cotton t-shirt. Then, I applied this Moisture Rich Leave-In conditioner. My hair seemed to melt in my hands, It was so soft and manageable. It felt like silk. I feel like Aphogee really researched curly hair and chose ingredients that was necessary to protect our curls and make them more manageable. My hair was shiny and tangle free for days! And my styling process was a breeze. I would recommend this product to every curly girl, no matter your hair type! I love this leave-in conditioner just as much as I loved the original Protein Rich Leave-In conditioner by Aphogee!

  • Product Promises: Curlific! products are pH optimized for maximum results and contain our exclusive PropHyatmine Complex, utilizing proteins for strength, emollients for shine and humectants for softness. Curlific! is serious care for textured hair.
  • Uses: Wavy, Curly or Coiled hair types are more susceptible to damage than straight hair, due to the structure and styling resistance. Weekly use of Curlific! Texture Treatment maintains beautiful hair, regardless of the environment or styling regimen. A MUST FOR COLOR TREATED CURLS!
  • How to Use: Shampoo with Curlific Textured Hair Wash. After rinsing with warm water, work a liberal amount of Curlific! Texture Treatment through your thirsty locks. Leave on a minte and then rinse, finishing with cool water.

Once again, I shampooed my hair then applied this Texture Treatment. I left it on for about three minutes, then rinsed with cool water. This was definitely a treat for my hair I did not detangle before hand,  so I was pleasantly surprised when I rinsed my hair and my tangles melted away. My hair was soft, defined and I did not have to do much finger tangling afterwards. I can’t say that I have noticed a huge difference in my curls over a long period of time because I’ve only been using this product, once a week for three weeks. I can say that everytime I do use it, my hair feels healthier and it is easier to manage. My hair is color treated,so I’m hoping this product keeps my colored treated tresses healthy. I cannot wait to grow this color out, but I digress! To all my fellow curly, kinky, wavy, or coily haired naturalistas, I would definitely give Aphogee Curlific! line a try. You won’t be disappointed. Please share your experiences with Aphogee Curlific! in the comments below! I will be giving  the shampoo and curling cream a try soon, so stay tuned!

Feature Friday: Felicia

1. Tell me about yourself.

My name is Felicia! I am a graduate of McNeese State University (get an education)! I love talking/ listening to people about life in general. I’m currently working with children with autism ( Behavioral therapist). I also attended Bible college at Cottonwood Leadership College in California. I love traveling, hanging with friends, and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

2. How long have you been natural and what made you decide to go natural?

I have been natural since March 14, 2012. I decided to go natural because I wanted my natural hair color to come out more. I was confident that I could pull of any look. I also wanted to see the true texture of my hair. I thought to myself is, “Is my hair as nappy as I think”?

3. Have you always embraced your natural hair texture?

I did not embrace my texture at first! However, my first reaction was it’s not that bad but I need a wig.

IMG_1662[1]

4. How would you describe your hair?

I would describe my hair has thick and soft. I would describe it as a sponge, it soaks up products. It can be dry at times, kinky curly, and volume. In some parts my hair has a curl pattern especially when its wet but even after being natural for over a year, I still have to cut straight ends.

5. What is your natural hair regimen?

First and foremost, I am not diligent on my regimen. I do feel eating healthy promotes hair growth, as well as drinking lots of water. I always begin and end my hair wash with cold water. I shampoo some times but I definitely wash my hair with conditioner  and style with a leave in conditioner. I have my spray bottle with bottled water and conditioner. I can’t and don’t style my hair unless it is wet. I try to wear protective styles so I only wash once a week! I will do a twist out and put a cap or cute beanie on.

6. What products can’t you live without?

I can not live without cocout oil (organic)!!!! I used Miss Jessie’s Crème de La Crème (Target) my first year. I will be testing out Shea Moisture soon. I also used Hawaiian Silky (Sally’s Beauty Salon).

IMG_1525[1] 7. How do you retain length and maintain the health of your hair?

I maintain length and health by keeping my hair moisturized. I tend to have a tendency to want to touch my hair when I am bored at home so I try to wrap my hair as soon as I get home. I have noticed braids/ kinky twist have helped the length of my hair. I love pulling it all up and doing a twist out. I believe it was a protective style that I could look back and see the growth.

8. What lessons have you learned during your natural hair journey?

I have learned to embrace every stage! I regret not rocking my boy cut because everyone can’t be you! Own your look because only you are brave enough to stand out of the crowd. I learned that my hair can grow! When I was perming my hair, it never grew. However, with in a year my natural hair length was longer than it has ever been since childhood!!!

9. Is there any advice you would like to give to other fellow curly girls?

I would say embrace it! Seek out twist out tutorials on YouTube!! If your twisting and it doesn’t feel good it probably will be the best twist out ever!!! Do not use products with alcohol on a regular basis. Try to incorporate more fruits into your diet. Don’t give up on your hair. I would pray over my hair as I washed 🙂 YouTube or tutorials will not solve every problem, you have to train your hair! It’s like your baby, you have to see what works for it and nurture your progress. You are training your hair it takes patience.

ADRIENNE

IMG_3736

1. Tell us about yourself.

My name is Adrienne. I love being active and anything athletically competitive and I LOVE movies, particularly RomCom & Action! I’m not the best at styling my hair but I try, that’s what counts right?!? Also, I’m blessed to be married to my love and new hubby! @malc04

2. How long have you been natural and what made you decide to go natural?

It’s been about 4 years. I noticed my hair was unhealthy, my ends were terrible. I wanted my hair to grow so I figured I had to change something.

3. Have you always embraced your natural texture?

Not always, I sort of went back and forward with it when I was younger. I love my hair now, straight or curly.

IMG_4043

IMG_4576

4. How would you describe your hair?

Long & thick, curl pattern is 3b.

5. What is your natural hair regimen?

I typically wear my hair straight. I go to my hair dresser often because I feel more comfortable letting a professional style it rather than flat ironing it myself and potientially damaging it. When I wear my hair curly, I always use Curl Enhancing Smoothie right after washing it and apply mousse to the ends to enhance my curls.

IMG_4710

6. What products can’t you live without?

Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum, Curl Enhancing Smoothie, & mousse

7. How do you retain length and maintain the health of your hair?

I very rarely flat iron (usually twice a month), and when I do, my hair dresser usually does it. I use heat protectant, and I don’t color or highlight.

8. What lessons have you learned during your natural hair journey?

I can live without a relaxer and it’s not nearly as hard to maintain as I thought it would be.

9. Is there any advice you would like to give to to other fellow curly girls?

It’s all about what you want, try out different methods and products (by word of mouth) to find what works best for your hair and what you prefer.

Feature Friday: Lizzie

LIZZIE
511

Hi everyone, this will be my first Feature Friday of many! I am very excited to provide a platform for fellow naturalistas of every texture to share their natural hair stories with everyone! The first Feature Friday is Lizzie from Lafayette, Louisiana, my BEST friend! Her hair is dope and she will tell you all about it! Hope you all enjoy!

1. Tell us about yourself.

My name is Elizabeth, I go by Liz. I love the natural movement! In addition, I love new challenges, and I admire people who are passionate and purposeful in their lives.

2. How long have you been natural and what made you decide to go natural?

I have been natural since after high school. I didn’t really decide to go natural. My mother stopped putting perms, because she was sure that her hair was falling out because of it. For this reason, I stopped as well (8 yrs ago). However, I discovered the Chi iron and wore that out. I didn’t really wear my hair in its “natural state” until I started AmeriCorps (Community Service Program) 3 years ago. I started wearing it this way because I would sweat, and it was hard to maintain straight hair. Also in the program so many girls had textured hair and it was welcoming.

3. Have you always embraced your natural hair texture?

No, I thought for awhile that my hair was pretty, but it was something that needed to be “done” or straightened in order to be beautiful. That has changed however!

4. How would you describe your hair?

My hair is soft and very curly, a S pattern, it is thin looking when wet and when it’s fully dry, it is thick and bountiful.

5. What is your natural hair regimen?

My hair is colored, so I use sulfate free, color shampoos most of the time. I wash my hair once a week. I condition with regular conditioner for colored hair, and I condition with 3 minute Aussie Moist conditioner, which is warmed with Olive oil. After a while my hair is soaking wet, I apply color protecting serum. After, if I am wearing my hair stretched, I towel dry (I know frizz…but I am not wearing my hair out) and I braid it into 4 braids with just leave in conditioner and then do protective styles (several different buns…etc) for the week.

6. What products can’t you live without?

Curl Enhancing Smoothie

7. How do you retain length and maintain the health of your hair?

I wash my hair once a week, and I do not straighten my hair often.

8. What lessons have you learned during your natural hair journey?

That I love my hair just the way it is, and that when you know what to do, it is easier to manage than straight hair.

9. Is there any advice you would like to give to fellow textured ladies?

Yes, have fun with your hair.

10. Where can we find you?

I can only be reached here! So please hit up Jai if you’re interested in learning more, we should do a video together!

Benefits of Drinking Water for Healthier Hair

homesteading-bottled-water

I’m sure you have heard over and over again that you should consume 8 to 10 glasses of water per day in order to stay healthy and hydrated, but did you know the amount of water you consume directly affects hair growth? Water is the main source of energy for every cell of the body including the cells that drive hair growth. Water makes up 1/4 of the weight of the hair strand. Dehydration directly impacts healthy hair growth. A lack of water can result in a lack of moisture in your hair which further results in dry and brittle hair. Hair may actually stop growing at the maximum genetic rate if you don’t intake enough water. Water keeps the body hydrated and it is the carrier of nutrients. It promotes a healthy shine in hair and skin. Drinking more water can be the best thing for your hair, especially if it is dry and brittle. If you’ve tried everything else to bring life to your hair and nothing is working, drinking water may be exactly what your hair regimen is missing.

Product Review: Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter Moisturizer and Leave-In H2 Conditioner

I promised a product review in my last post so here it is! I’ll start with the Olive Oil & Mango Butter Moisturizer by Elasta QP.

4965657af186b9092c7a96976ffe881c_XL

  • Product Promises: “Moisturizing Butter of Mango and Olive Oil creates this intensely rich thermal proctecting treatment. Use Olive and Mango Butter Moisturizer daily for softer fuller looking hair.”
  • Uses: “Apply daily to target dry ends and help prevent breakage.”
  • Styling Uses: “Excellent for Fingerstyle, Two Strand Twist and Spiral Rod Sets. Transitioners can apply to blend textures. Texturizers can define curls and waves.”

I have used this product a couple of times and my experiences were different each time. I’ve used this product on wet and dry hair and I’ve found it worked better for me on slightly damp hair. My favorite feature about this product is the smell, it smells sweet and heavenly. I LOVE it. The product is labeled as an “Intensive Treatment” but I wouldn’t necessarily say it lived up to that title. I spritzed my stretched, dry hair with the Leave-In H2 Conditioner, sealed it with coconut oil, then used the moisturizer to dry and add moisture to my dry ends and it did the job. My twistout results were pretty good when I used this product, but I have gotten better results and more moisture using Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie ( I absolutely love that stuff). I just so happened to have a jar of the Elasta QP moisturizer that I’m trying to get rid of because (*clears throat, cues violin*)  I have Hair A.D.D and I am a recovering product junkie!!! I am trying to use all the products I bought just because I seen it down the aisle at Walgreens! Don’t judge me! Ultimately, this product did the trick and I would definitely use it again. The Olive Oil & Mango Butter Moisturizer is good in my book! Now lets get to the really good stuff, the Leave-In H2 Conditioner.
fd8b0f77d767f1f6640afba6916ff67c_XL

  • Product Promises:” Moisturizing Butter of Mango and Olive Oil leaves hair incredibly soft, and silky-smooth with great body, movement and shine. Perfect for natural, braided and straight styles leaving hair texture feeling like silk without build-up, dryness or frizz.”
  • To Use: “Shampoo and rinse hair well. Spray Leave-In H2 liberally into hair. Gently comb through hair. DO NOT RINSE.  Style as desired. For straightening curls, waves or smoothing frizz, blow dry hair.”

Let me start off by saying, this is a staple in my regimen! I absolutely love it! Like the moisturizer, the smell is amazing. I will literally be sitting in my car or in class, and in my head I’m wondering, “Man what smells so good?” Then I realize, the wonderful smell is my leave-in conditioner! That is my favorite thing about this product. I also feel that it is very effective as a leave-in conditioner in my hair. It does create body and movement in my hair as well. There is no build-up and it mixes well with my other products. This product gets an A+ from me. I would recommend this product to a fellow natural, but do keep in mind that what works for me may not work for you! Hopefully, this review is helpful to you all and please feel free to comment and let me know how these products worked for you! Thank you all for taking the time to read this review!
