Hello Girls, I live in the Caribbean with my family and work part-time. For the longest time, could not get my relaxed hair to grow past my shoulders, was super thin and unhealthy so after some time, decided to return natural and will never looked back. Love it, my hair is longer and healthier than ever and am happy.
1. Tell us about yourself.
2. How long have you been natural and what made you decide to go natural?
Have been natural now for 2 years 4 months. Decided to return natural because I simply did not know how to take care of my own hair, she would never grow and could never achieve a style I wanted without my stylist. After being inspired by my aunt, and with support from the rest of my family, decided to go for it.
3. Have you always embraced your natural hair texture?
Not at all, did not even consider going natural because did not know anything about my own natural hair. Always had my hair relaxed every 4 months so never really knew anything about my natural texture until I started to transition, did that for 4 months, got impatient so decided to BC on February 28, 2012.
4. How would you describe your hair?
She has personality and is alive!!! My texture is 4C, very kinky, coily, zigly zagly. Length is 11″ to 12″. In the back, is more tightly coiled and in the front, is looser coils. She loves water, Tresemme & Aussie Moist conditioners, creams, oils of any kind, prefers to be left alone 90% of the time in protective styles.
5. What is your natural hair regimen?
Wash Days are very 2 to 3 weeks, finger-detangle with VO5 Conditioner & Oil, then do 15-20 large braids, wash with ACV mix and do a tea rinse, let her air dry for about 15 minutes, on to my protective style, 2 Strand Twists, apply my conditioner mix and oil to seal in moisture. Do treatments when needed.
6. What products can’t you live without?
Water is absolutely one of them, Tresemme, Aussie Moist or VO5 Conditioner, Olive & Coconut Oil, scrunchies and my satin cap!!! As long as I have the above am ok. As time goes on, am trying to simplify my hair regimen, once I find what works, I stick to that. Ooh, of course, my fingers, they are my combs 😀
7. How do you retain length and maintain the health of your hair?
The best thing I can say is consistency, try my best to always keep tresses moisturized, wear a satin cap when sleeping, every single night, do treatments every 2 to 3 months. I use zero heat and keep her in protective styles 3 weeks, then rest for 1 week. If my hair does not like a product, will not use again.
8. What lessons have you learned during your natural hair journey?
I have learned to appreciate and love my natural hair, how to take care of her and see that natural hair is not only amazing but extremely versatile in every way. I am amazed at other Naturalistas, how they take such great care if their own tresses and support ones going through a hard time, sweet community 😀
9. Is there any advice you would like to give to fellow textured ladies?
Please keep rocking your lovely tresses, whenever you see a natural girl, smile and compliment her about her lovely hair, trust me, you will make her day. Love your hair, she is unique and your crown of glory so smile and wear your crown girls. Wear your hair the way you choose to, it is yours so have a blast dolls!
